  • You are ready for the next level or
  • just getting job ready!

OK, first of all, make sure you download the CV template guide from link below this video. This not only gives you the outline but shows you what to write and not to write – content is king!

I know how disheartening it can be to send out 50 CVs and hear crickets. When you click send you have high hopes, you poured hours into this document. After a while, you give up hope. You don’t know how your CV compares to others, the feedback is useless or non at all.

You start to invent reasons why. You start to believe you don’t have the skills and maybe downplay or fail to recognise your value and it’s tempting to aim lower.

Sometimes it’s simply about telling the right story so that the skills relevant to the job you are applying jump right out in the hiring managers face.

Here’s a few general tips, and then we’ll run through the content sections of the perfect CV for Data or Tech roles.

So I’m going to start with the goal – with each stage of the process be clear on the goal and the goal of a CV is not to get you the job – so you can easy on detail. The purpose is to get you to the next stage. so spark enough checkboxes and interest in the mind of the recruiter to get in.

Tip 1: No fancy photoshop, PowerPoint, canva or text boxes. Software scans CVs online to appear in head hunter searches. Stick to Word Processed documents or plain text files.

Tip 2: Think of the top half first page as prime retail space!

Tip 3: Often recruiters/hiring managers skim read – so bullets are good – too much blub can harm your chances.

Ok so you may have one of two scenarios either you are applying for an advertised role and you know all the details or you’re building a CV for prospecting or in readiness.

If it’s the later – do some homework –

  • Find 5 job adverts that interest you
  • What skills come up frequently?
  • Bullet these with great specific examples, stats and action verbs.
  • If you’ve got gaps don’t worry – you will learn them! come up with a plan for these later….

So let’s walk through the sections of an amazing Tech role CV:

Contact details

You don’t need to list your age, marital status or any personal information – but make sure these are current and you can be contacted with them.

Profile section

I think the best advice I’ve ever heard is to treat this as the tell me about yourslef question.

Tell me where you are going, what you have achieved and bridge the gap in 3 sentences. Be forward-thinking and bring relevancy to the role.

Skills section

We often describe these as Main Achievements & Skills

The good news is that you can repurpose these for your linked in profile summary.

Highlight achievements, use action verbs, you can view a list at the Muse.

Where you can use stats. Numbers give a picture of scale and context.

Experience section

How you stand out?

When you describe your past jobs on your resume, don’t tell us the tasks and duties associated with the job. Anybody in the job would have had the same responsibilities – in fact, we’ve probably read 5 or more CVs with just the same job. Tell us what you came, saw and conquered – and why those accomplishments mattered

References / Hobbies & Interests

Finally, References are no longer required, hobbies and interests 3 tops – careful not to overshare.

Finally share with someone for feedback

The goal of the CV is to get to the next stage – the best possible outcome is a conversation – be that online or

My advice if you can get a conversation, a telephone interview or just better still an informal chat with the hiring manager.
