In fact one of my friends spent 10 years at a company shifting roles without responsibilities. He was never seen as anything more. When he shifted his behaviour and took these steps this was recognised. Within just a few months he was promoted to leader of the PMO and in all honesty, you wouldn’t recognise the person he had become. He had seriously upleveled. He looked good, felt good, met a wonderful partner and everyone admires him – some even want to be him! Being successful makes you feel fulfilled in life at work and at home.

1. Tell your manager – I spent a long time thinking my team were happy as they were and weren’t interested in progression
2. Take ownership Avoid making excuses – when I say to take ownership I mean to take ownership and make it happen – be the one who brings solutions to the table, not just problems.
3. Organise and take responsibility to organise others – work on small projects.
4. Ask for responsibilities – start to take things on and ask what can be done to help.
